Course Description

This course introduces the elements of soils, hydrology, water quality, and watershed management.

 

 

Statement and Broad Goals

This course is designed to be an introduction to surface and groundwater hydrology.  Current issues will be on synthesis of current information on the fundamental properties, process of forest soils, hydrology, and water quality with emphasis on the watershed.
 

 

 

Reading Assignments

The student will need to read the online lessons as well as selected readings in the textbooks. Tests include information both from the online lessons and from the textbook readings.

Grading Policy

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = Below 60

Students will be graded based on the following criteria:

Course grades will be computed on basis of:
First Exam                       =  100 points
Second Exam                  =  100 points
Current Issues                 =  150 points
Land Management Plan  =  100 points
Total                                =  450 points

Current issues in hydrology should be turned in on a weekly basis.  Any late issues will be deducted by 3 points.

Land management plan due date: Last week of class.

 

 

Weekly Summaries of Current Environmental Issues

You will need to find 15 current issues in hydrology that you can research and write a two page summary for. You can do this on a weekly basis. You can also emaill your summaries to the instructor at cogbonnaya@me.vccs.edu.

 

 

Land Management Plan (100 points)

The purpose of this project is to allow each student to use his or her knowledge of hydrology in developing a land management system for a particular land area. Each student is required to pick a plot of land to do the land management plan.

See hand-out on requirements for term project.

Follow instructions as indicated, but the following additional information might be of help to you.

 

Requirements:

  1.  Climatic Inventory:  (25 points)

    Describe the following in graphical or tabular form or in the cases when specific data are not available by appropriate statements.
    1.  Rainfall
      1.  Yearly, total
      2. Seasonal distribution
      3. Expected intensity
      4. Hazard expectancy (hail, etc.)


    2.  Air temperatures
      1.  Maximums and minimums
      2. Seasonal changes

 

B.  Type of Ecosystems (20 points)

  1.  Include a tracing or Xerox copy of the area map.

  2. Lists the types of ecosystems found in your chosen area with the approximate acreage.


C. Identification of land management problems: (25 points)


     Identify and describe each of the following potential problems and others that you may consider pertinent to your situation for each ecosystem type.

      1.  Erosion – wind and water
      2. Water infiltration, runoff loss, evaporation control, drouthiness
      3. Soil management
      4. Etc.


D. Alternative land management plan:  (20 points)

     This should not be a mere change in acreage but a total review of all you have put together.  Do this as precisely as possible but consider only the economic points.

 

E. Neatness of project (10 points)

 

Note: This project can be done as a group (team).

Instructions for Individuals with Disabilities

All students at MECC should abide by the standards of conduct outlined in the MECC Student Handbook. Cheating WILL NOT be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating on an assignment or test will receive a zero for that assignment.

 

 

Attendance Policy

Regular class attendance is required. When absence from a class is necessary, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor prior to the absence. The student is responsible for the subsequent completion of all work missed during an absence. (MECC Student Handbook)

Mountain Empire Community College is committed to academic quality and student success. Elements that support both of these values are regular attendance and participation in class. The college policy states that regular class attendance is required. The attendance policy in this class is that you spend at least 5 hours per week working on assignments, which will help ensure you stay on track. As listed above in the Weekly Schedule, the scheduled quiz and assignment should be completed each week.

Testing Center Guidelines

MECC Testing Guidelines 

The MECC Testing Center supports the college goal of providing quality student services that are responsive to the needs of current and prospective students. The Testing Center coordinates testing services for new and continuing students which include placement testing, ability-to-benefit testing, and testing for Internet courses. Upon adjunct faculty request, the Center will administer make-up test. In addition, students enrolled in distance education classes at other VCCS institutions may make arrangements for proctored testing.

The Testing Center, located in the Student Services Suite in Holton Hall, provides outstanding customer service by being courteous, responsible, and helpful. Tests are administered following appropriate testing protocol in a clean, comfortable, quiet, and secure testing environment. 

The Center offers extended hours to serve students and prospective students, and the Testing Coordinator also arranges evening and Saturday testing with the Wampler Library located in MECC Robb Hall. (Request for special testing arrangements must be made at least 24 hours in advance.)
In order to ensure an accurate and fair process for all concerned, the procedures detailed below, must be followed:
General Guidelines for Students
All exams are administered on a walk-in, first-come/first-serve basis. Testing Center Hours are 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday – Thursday, and 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM on Fridays. Students should arrive early enough to allow ample time to complete the tests during the operating hours. Since operating hours may vary seasonally, testing times should be verified by calling 276-523-7472.

  • Examinees must show their MECC student ID in order to take an exam. (Other forms of acceptable identification include, state identification cards, driver’s licenses, employee ID cards, military ID cards, passports, and student ID cards). Without proper ID, the student will not be allowed to take an exam.
  • Examinees are requested not to bring cell phones, pagers, etc. with them to the Testing Center when taking an exam. Any items brought to the Center must be left in the reception area prior to testing. The Testing Center will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or broken items. To ensure safety of these items, please leave them in your vehicle or at home while testing.
  • No eating or drinking is allowed in the testing room.
  • Examinees must keep noise to a minimum for the benefit of other examinees.
  • Cheating is not allowed and examines will be asked to stop testing and leave the Testing Center if found cheating. Cheating may include making an effort to remove test materials or notes from the testing room, not following test procedures, failing to stop work when time is called, disturbing or attempting to get answers from another examinee, using unauthorized aids during testing, and disregarding proctors instructions. It is considered academic dishonesty for a student to have any unauthorized materials while taking an exam.  Academic dishonesty may result in disciplinary action by the College.
  • Children, family, and friends are not permitted in the testing rooms.  The testing staff will refuse to test an examinee that brings children to the Testing Center and asks to leave them in the waiting area.
  • Students with disabilities who need special testing assistance must make arrangements in advance with the college disabilities coordinator, Dale Lee at 276-523-2400, ext. 343 or dlee@me.vccs.edu
  • Students may not take more than two exams per course per day.  Students should refer to their course syllabus and/or their instructors for further information.
  • A test must be submitted by the online course instructor and on file with the Testing Center before a student can call for an appointment.

The Testing Center will maintain a proctoring log in which students will record the following information:

  • Student name and EMPLID
  • Course Number (ex. MTH 163)
  • Test Number
  • Date/time student actually takes test
