Job Description:

Class Title: Sewerage Plant Operator

Department: Sewer

Definition of Work:

This is semi-skilled mechanical work ath the town wastewater plant. The employee is responsible for the efficient operation of the plant on an assigned shift in accordance with standard procedures. After the initial period of on-the-job training, the employee usually works without direct supervision; assignments and guidance are received from the Public Works Superintendent.

Examples of Work:

• Takes samples of fluids regularly and performs routine chemical tests.
• Guided by test results, makes necessary corrections or adjustments to plant operation.
• Draws sludge to pits from settling tanks and to digester.
• Reads and records meters, gauges, and thermometers.
• Cleans and lubricates motors, pumps, valves, and other equipment.
• Performs minor maintenance tasks and makes adjustments to plant equipment.
• Keeps plant and ground clean and orderly during assigned shift.
• Performs any related work as designated by supervisor not specifically described in the job description.

Requirements of Work

• Knowledge of wastewater treatment machinery, systems and equipment.
• Knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in the treatment of wastewater.
• Ability to make minor repairs on plant machinery and equipment.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
• Ability to obtain, within a reasonable time, the appropriate operator's certificate as issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Good physical condition.

Desirable Preparation for Work

Some experience in mechanical equipment operation; and graduation from high school, preferably including courses in chemistry and bacteriology.

Necessary Special Requirement

Possession of a valid Virginia Operator's License.

This position is also willing to hire an operator-in-training.
